Have you ever experienced imposter syndrome? That feeling of secretly not cutting it and fearing discovery? I have.
As a small business owner and a homeschool mom, I certainly have opportunities for this corrosive self-doubt to creep in. Every time I decide on the next step for my business, or mulled over a curriculum decision for my oldest, I have felt that nagging doubt that I’m not cut out for the challenges I face; I often fear that someone will see through me and expose how little confidence I carry in my heart.
Can you imagine how the disciples might have felt in the Gospel today? Jesus chose them and called them specifically, yet His parables were outside their understanding. Perhaps it took great courage for them to ask Jesus to explain. Maybe there was even shame or doubt—Can I be meant for this if I need help to understand?
Feeling this doubt in our own vocations is disheartening, but Jesus is waiting for us. He’s already there, and His arms are open wide. He has called us and given us everything we need to succeed when we rest in Him.
We are not imposters—we are creations of the Living God, called to live out our vocations with courageous faith. When we stumble, or when we doubt, let us seek Jesus in prayer and ask Him for understanding.
Let us follow the example of the disciples and trust in God’s timing in all things, but especially for clarity and understanding in our own vocations.
You are meant for Jesus, and He made you for this purpose.
Lord Jesus, I trust in you.
I trust in your timing and your unending love for me.
Thank you for calling me to such beautiful purposes, and for helping me seek what is good and true. Make me steadfast in my faith and confident that my self-worth comes from you. Teach me to be authentically yours in each day of my life.
