FAQ
Why is it called a prayerful study?
By approaching the Catechism as a prayerful study, we engage both our head and heart to understand and love the teachings of the Church. It is an invitation to bring our questions and thoughts to God in prayer as we read the Catechism.
Who is this journal for?
This journal includes a detailed how-to-use section, introduction to the Catechism, and plenty of space for notes, making it ideal for anyone that wants to both read and remember the Catechism. It is designed to be used by men or women, in a group or for personal prayer, and for those new to the Catholic faith or those embarking on scholarly study.
How is it organized?
The Catechism Companion Journal follows the same four parts (or “pillars”) as the Catechism: The Profession of Faith; The Celebration of the Christian Mystery; Life in Christ; and Christian Prayer.
How much space is there to take notes?
There are over 100 lined pages for notes, plus dedicated sections for visio divina, lectio divina, and Mass connections.
How long is the reading plan?
The Catechism reading plan would take about 9 months to complete if you were reading one set of paragraphs each day. However, we specifically did not assign numbered days for each set of paragraphs as the pace of reading is not the goal. Each person brings a unique perspective to their Catechism study, and Christ meets us exactly where we are. Maybe you sit with one set of paragraphs for a week, or read multiple sets of readings in a day. The timeline matters less than accepting the invitation to slow down and reflect on the mysteries of the Church.
Why are scripture verses included in the reading plan?
The Catechism is deeply rooted in scripture, with over 1,400 verses cited throughout the text. To make it easier to study these rich connections between the Catechism and scripture, each set of Catechism paragraphs in the reading plan includes a suggested scripture reading. These suggested verses are derived from the Catechism footnotes and perfect for lectio divina.
