“Behold, I come to do Your will, O God”—these nine words are powerful prayer that speaks volumes about the openness of the heart.
We often hear these words of surrender to the Father’s grace allowing Him to guide us in doing His will in Scripture. It's a beautiful proclamation and acknowledgement of the Creator’s goodness. And somehow, though we hear these words often, we find ourselves struggling to say those words out loud.
Perhaps we get caught up in things being just right in order to do the Father’s will or even being afraid of not being capable of doing His will. We fear that we may disappoint God by letting a single thing go wrong, despair when things aren’t going right, then question if we’re doing the Father’s will.
Still, we are called to behold the Creator in wonder and be held in His hands.
Today we celebrate the beautiful and joyful mystery of the Annunciation where Mary, our mother, boldly and courageously opens her heart to the Lord. She casts fear aside with confidence, trusting that the Father will provide and never lead her astray. She beholds the Father as He holds her in His hands as the mother of His Son. Mary allows the wonder and awe to echo through her actions, providing the earthly example to her Son who seeks to do His heavenly Father’s will in everything.
As we commemorate the Blessed Mother’s fiat to our Lord, may we follow her example of beholding the Lord and allowing Him to guide and care for us as His beloved sons and daughters. Let us echo the words of our Lord Jesus and our mother Mary: “Behold, I come to do Your will, O God.”
