3 Things the Church Says About Mary

The Church's teachings on Mary aren’t just theological—they’re deeply personal, rooted in love, reverence, and awe for the one who bore Christ. As we celebrate the Assumption of Mary, here are 3 things the Catechism of the Catholic Church says about her:

First, Mary was assumed into heaven, body and soul.

“The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin is a singular participation in her Son's Resurrection and an anticipation of the resurrection of other Christians.” - CCC 966

Her Assumption reminds us of the promise that awaits all who belong to Christ: resurrection and union with God.

The second is that Mary is the Mother of the Church—and of each of us.

“She is clearly the mother of the members of Christ... since she has by her charity joined in bringing about the birth of believers in the Church.” - CCC 963

She walks beside us not just as Jesus’ mother, but as our own — forming us in the life of faith.

Finally, the Church reminds us often that Mary’s yes changed everything.

“The Virgin Mary ‘co‑operated through free faith and obedience in human salvation.’ She uttered her yes ‘in the name of all human nature.’ By her obedience she became the new Eve, mother of the living.” - CCC 511

Mary’s surrender teaches us how to live with openness, trust, and love for God’s will. It reminds us that in saying “yes” to God’s invitations, He can bring about His will of pure goodness!

May we honor Mary not only with our prayers this month, but with our imitation of her courage and faith.
