4 Steps to Reading Scripture More Intentionally

We know reading Scripture can be daunting, whether you're doing it for the first time or thousandth time. Next time you sit down with the Mass readings, relax your shoulders and take a few deep breaths to help focus your mind on an awareness of God’s presence.

If your mind begins to wander, don’t berate yourself; simply take a few more deep breaths and begin reading.

As you approach the Word of God, we encourage you to use an ancient method of reading scripture—Lectio Divina.

Lectio Divina is a 4 step process:

  1. Reading // Read the selected Scripture and make note of what sticks out.

  2. Meditating // Read it again, pondering what God is saying through His Word.

  3. Contemplating // Read it again, responding to God and entering into conversation with Him.

  4. Praying // Rest quietly in the presence of God, letting His love wash over you.

This practice of Lectio Divina can be especially useful when we prepare for Sunday Mass by reading ahead. As you read the Sunday readings, use these 4 steps to really pray with God’s Word more deeply and let it take root in your heart. (You can even take notes during your meditation in your journal!)
