When Jesus said, “Come to me all you who are weary, and I will give you rest,” I had no idea He wanted to give me rest from my own demands. This kind of weight is pernicious because our weariness can be confused with righteousness, when, in reality, we’re shouldering unnecessary expectations of ourselves and others that steal our joy. These burdens are not from the Lord, and they’re heavier than we realize. “I should love God more. I should move past my grief. I should be working out daily. I shouldn’t be struggling with this same sin…” Yes, God deserves all our love, sanctification is daily work, and exercise is good for the body. And still how often can we let objective truth be twisted into a shameful lie against us!
The Father’s heart is for us. He doesn’t declare with a stern expression and raised eyebrow, “You should be more for me. I have exceptionally high standards of my sons and daughters.” No, our loving Father promises us with a smile and light-hearted eyes, “Come to me, my child — my yoke is easy, my burden is light.” Lord, we want your lightness! Help us release our fear and pride and come to you not as adults, but as your own beloved children. What are those recurring thoughts, judgments and expectations about yourself or others that feel heavy? Invite the Holy Spirit to gently sift your mind and heart and bring illumination on what you carry and offer them to Jesus.
Consider letting this prayer inhabit your body: release burdens in Jesus’ name as you tightly squeeze your fists and slowly release them. Or try standing and shaking your arms or legs — one at a time. Experience the release of the exhale. Breathe in the Holy Spirit of power, love and self-control. Rest in His promises.
