Have you ever met someone that lights up a room? When they walk in, the world is instantly a better place. In my life, that light’s name is Lindsey. I met Lindsey a few years ago while we were both volunteering at our local parish. We became instant friends and have only grown closer since. Every time I see her, she gives me the biggest hug and a huge smile. She has a laugh that can be heard for miles, and she loves with her whole heart. Her joy is rooted deep and it spills out onto everyone around her. You probably have a Lindsey in your life, too. Maybe you are the Lindsey in your friend group. I think we can all agree the world needs more people like her.
In the first reading, we hear one of the four "Servant Songs" where God speaks about Jesus, the ultimate servant. He says, “It is too little for you to be my servant … I will make you a light to the nations.” This statement demonstrates God's incredible love for his servants. Not only are we called to serve, but we will be lifted up by being a light and sharing His message with the world. St. John the Baptist lived out this calling by preparing the way for Jesus. His message was able to grab people’s attention and redirect it to “the one who is coming after me.” Take a deep breath and imagine the Lord saying those words to you: “It is too little for you to be my servant … I will make you a light to the nations.”
God is calling us to be a light to the world by living out our faith and pointing people to Christ. When I hear that I think, Okay, great, how do I do that? How do I be a light to the nations? Sometimes being a light means offering to pray with someone. Sometimes it means asking for forgiveness. Sometimes it’s preaching on a street corner or serving the poor. Sometimes it’s as simple as smiling at a stranger. Whether you choose to use your contagious laughter like Lindsey or powerful words like St. John, you are doing God’s will. By being a light, you bring Christ to the world.
