Growing up as a first generation Filipino-American, I embraced a growing status quo: become a nurse and make a lot of money. However, I came to learn that nursing is not for everybody. Nursing is a calling, and it was not a calling that God had meant for me. I pulled out of the Nursing Program, and broke the status quo. In doing so, I pursued my passion in technology which then opened the door to a lot of opportunities. Today I am an IT analyst for the Houston Methodist Hospital System.

Though I do not deal with direct patient care, I support those frontline heroes who save lives every day. Through the accumulated knowledge of technology and business, I was able to turn a hobby into a business by providing DJ services and Audio/Visual services to prospective clients.

I broke the status quo, and in doing so, pursued the profession I am happy and passionate about. God knew what He was doing in my life.

God’s plan for me was to be obedient to Him and embrace the calling He gave me, even though it was not what was expected of me. Elizabeth and Zechariah did something similar: though others were shocked that she would not name her son after his father as it was with other relatives in the family, they were obedient to God, broke the status quo, and named him John. John would eventually go on and change the world, as “the child grew and became strong in spirit.” He was John the Baptist, who would go on to baptize Jesus Christ. Elizabeth and Zechariah’s obedience and courage to break the status quo brought about something amazing.

I challenge you to break your status quo, trust God, and see how far He takes you!
