Our Favorite Ways to Journal at Mass

It's been a joy to share the new 2024-25 Mass Journals with you! Check them out right here.

One of our favorite ways to use the ESS Mass journal is prayer journaling using the Notes section. There are a few different ways you can utilize this section to pray before, during, and after Mass:

  1. Write down your own prayers // Use this space to journal from the heart, speaking what’s on your mind to the Lord and being honest about what’s bothering you, what’s bringing you joy, etc.

  2. Take notes on the homily // Listen close to what the priest shares about that Sunday’s readings. Write down things that stick out to you, and return to read them over after Mass to pray with them more and see what God might be telling you specifically through the Word.

  3. Ponder your own reflections on Scripture // Read (and re-read) the weekly readings, then write down what you learn, notice, feel, or wonder about. Then leave room for God to speak, too!

Jesus said in John's Gospel that he calls us friends (see John 15:15).

Remember: There is no “right way” to build a friendship with God.

The open-endedness of prayer can be daunting at first! Try starting small by using your journal every Sunday and talking to God like you would any other friend in your life.

Embrace the freedom and intimacy that comes from dialoguing with God one-on-one!
